Lab Grown Diamonds

In our fine jewelry collection, we use both diamonds that are mined from the Earth and diamonds that are made in a lab. We love lab grown diamonds for many reasons, and we understand you may have a few questions about them. Read on to learn a little more about lab grown diamonds used in some cupcakes and cashmere fine jewelry.

WHAT ARE LAB GROWN DIAMONDS?

Lab grown diamonds, first and foremost, are real diamonds. Lab grown diamonds go by many names: lab grown, man made, cultured, and lab made are the names we hear most often. Lab grown diamonds share the same physical and chemical properties as diamonds that were mined from the Earth. Lab grown diamonds are not synthetic; they are real diamonds that are grown in a controlled laboratory setting rather than mined from the Earth. They look the same as mined diamonds, and cannot be distinguished from mined diamonds even under magnification. WHY DO WE USE LAB GROWN DIAMONDS?

We use lab grown diamonds in some of our fine jewelry for two main reasons. First, lab grown diamonds are less expensive than mined diamonds, and that allows us to offer some of our fine jewelry pieces at lower prices than they would be with mined diamonds. Secondly, lab grown diamonds are sustainably manufactured and do not require any additional mining to create a new piece of jewelry.

ARE LAB GROWN DIAMONDS DIFFERENT FROM CUBIC ZIRCONIAS?

Yes. Cubic zirconia, which we use in our semi-fine jewelry, is a diamond simulant. Diamond simulants (or diamond alternatives) are made to look like diamonds, but they share no physical or chemical similarities. Common diamond simulants include cubic zirconias, white topaz, and moissanite. These stones are clear in color, very inexpensive, and durable enough to use in jewelry, which makes them a great choice to use in semi-fine jewelry. These are non-precious gemstones, and we do not use them in our fine jewelry.
